SEA CUCUMBER

Common Name: Sea Cucumber
Genus and Species: L
Phylum: Echinodermata
Class:
Holothuroidea
Identification: When unmolested these long ( 2-9
inches) yellowish green to yellow worm like critters definitely stand out from
their surroundings. Additional warty protrusions form their skin are
studded with minute spikes to ruin any predators ideas of eating them.
Also studding their length are additional small black spikes which hint at
their relationship to sea urchins.
Distribution: This sea cucumber is the
most dominant sea cucumber found in Southern California. Typically
located in sandy areas where it filters the sand for food, this sea cucumber
may also be found perched on and in between rocks adjacent to large sand beds.
Its depth distribution varies from location to location depending upon the
distribution of sand but is most common between 20 and 90 feet of water.
