FAMILY HEXAGRAMMIDAE / GREENLING

Common
Name: Spotted Kelpfish
Genus
and Species: Gibbonsia elegans
Distribution:
This fish ranges from Baja to Central California and are quite abundant around
Santa Catalina Island.
Habitat:
Spotted kelpfish prefer rocky areas with large amounts of red, green, and brown
low lying algae.
Habitat:
These fish rely on their camouflage when approached by divers. If however
you get too close don't be surprised if these fish dart to a nearby crevice for
shelter. Because these fish blend in so well with their surroundings,
often times the only way you will be able to spot these small fish is when they
dart away from your falling hand towards the rock they are perched on!
