FAMILY COTTIDAE

 Common Name:  Spotfin Sculpin

 Genus and Species:  Icelinus tenuis

*Distinctive Features:

*Distribution: Found in California.

*Behavior:  These fish will remain stationary when approached by divers.  In poor visibility an unwary diver may mistakenly place their hand on the dorsal fin of this fish and experience a VERY unwelcome pain in their hand!

*Habitat: These fish can be found along rocky bottoms within the kelp forest.  Their depth range is very large with sightings from as shallow as 15 feet to depths beyond the recreational diving limits.  On beach dives look for them between 15 and 60 feet of water.  Off of the coast these fish are more common between 35 to 75 feet of water.

*Fun Facts:  Still looking for information.

*Permits and Regulations:  Looking for information.
