TIDAL ZONES | 5 - 10 FEET | 10 - 30 FEET | 30 - 60 FEET | 60 - 90 FEET | 90 - 130 FEET Most of the spectrum of light from the sun is absorbed off of our coast by the time you reach 60 feet. At deeper depths the little remaining light is blue, and for the most part this governs the distribution of life at those depths up to the recreational diving limit. However off the California coast, the depths of thirty to sixty feet reap the benefits of having adequate light as well as nutrients provided by the upwelling which occurs when water from depth is brought up to the surface. The ecosystem off of our coast in the thirty to sixty feet of water is home to some of the most spectacular and unsual life in the ocean. Driving down the Pacific Coast Highway you are bound to pass by one of the most conspicuous denizens of this marine zone, the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera. | |||
