CABRILLO BEACH 

 Location:  Cabrillo Beach

San Pedro, CA

Take the 101 to Kanan Road and head westward down Kanan towards PCH.  Kanan dead ends on PCH, at this point make a right (northbound) until you see the El Matador sign on your right.  El Matador has a small gate and is easy to drive past.  You can find it by driving 2 miles north of Trancas Canyon Road in Malibu where the How's Market Place is.  If you pass El Pescador State Beach you have driven to far north.  If you are driving from the north take PCH Highway 1 south towards Santa Monica.  Once you pass Leo Carrillo State Beach, El Matador is about 2 miles further south.

 Experience:  Novice to experienced diver with experience doing beach entries on rocky beaches:  After Santa Ana winds have been blowing, or the ocean has been particularly inactive, Open Water divers are likely to find conditions similar or better to those they have been trained in.  Remember to use the lines in the sand, your depth, and compass headings to navigate this beach.  The biggest hurdles to overcome are: the long hike to the beach, the rocky entry, and sometimes large surf.
